Shisha in Northampton may be new but shisha is most definitely not. Shisha has its roots in antiquity and is enjoying a re-emergence in the present day. The shisha is smoked in a hookah, an instrument which allows for the passing of the smoke through water before inhalation. The origins are not certain but it is thought to be somewhere between India and Persia.
Having left its native home one of the first appearances in Western culture was in William Hickey’s Memoirs of 1775
and lets not forget the interpretation of shisha by Lewis Carroll in Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland.
The Caterpillar and Alice looked at each other for some time in silence: at last the Caterpillar took the water pipe out of its mouth, and addressed her in a languid, sleepy voice … ‘Who are YOU?’ said the Caterpillar.”
